授 is the combination of the radical for hand and the kanji 受 from 受ける、to take (an exam), or to receive. We have seen it before in 授業 for class, but in this chapter it is also used in 指導教授 (しどうきょうじゅ), for academic advisor. In the latter context, you can think of this character in terms of "receiving a helping hand" from someone in an academic context, who would naturally be your academic advisor.
