The kanji (ken) is often used in (kenkyu) meaning research, but it can also be used in the verb (togu), meaning to sharpen. The kanji looks like a pencil sharpener with four pencils lying next to it, emphasizing the meaning to sharpen. Two pencils are vertical and two are horizontal crossing the vertical pencils.
