The kanji means plate or dish. Often times when I see this kanji it reminds me of the hat of the mad-hatter character from the movie Alice and Wonderland. In the movie the Alice comes upon a tea party where the mad-hatter character is seen. There is also a very large table with place settings (plate, knife, fork) for every chair. Relating to this image of the mad-hatter and the table helps me to remember the kanji . Hope this helps!

Kanji 257 looks like a dish rack with 4 plates in it so this is how it helps me remember that it means plate or dish.
