On November 5, at the invitation from Binghamton University, Professor Wei Hong gave a talk entitled “Communicating with the Chinese — from linguistic and cultural perspectives”. From Confucian traditions, concepts of politeness and face, and her own perspectives on the conflicts from cross-cultural communication between English and Chinese, Professor Hong discussed the ways Chinese prefer to communicate: indirectness and contrary-fact-value. With interactive participation from the audiences, this talk was attended by more than 50 students in Chinese language program, faculty and graduate students at Binghamton and received very positive feedback from the students and faculty.
