On April 13, the 10th “2017 China Night” Cultural Event was held at Sunnyside Intermediate School in Lafayette, attracting 500 people from the local community. This large scale cultural event has been held every year since 2008 and has become an important activity for the local residences. Co-sponsored by Lafayette School Corporation and the Confucius Institute, this event was a collaboration of Purdue Chinese Students and Scholars Association, local community and K-12 faculty and administrators. About a dozen of Chinese cultural tables were set up in the gym, including calligraphy, paper cutting, peace knots, dumpling making, Chinese games, lantern riddles and so on. Kids were excited to get Zodiac animal stamps by taking part in the activities at each table. They would win a gift after gathering all 12 stamps. The talent show was a highlight of the event and has been always expected by parents who were eager to know how well their kids had learned about Chinese language and culture. The event ended with the melodic “Dance Rain Bamboos” and splendid performance by students from Purdue University Chinese School. “China Night” has become an important platform for local community to learn about Chinese language and culture.
