May 2015, Purdue, Ningbo University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Harbin Institute of Technology celebrated the 10th anniversary of Maymester to China “Intercultural Teamwork”, co-developed and led by ME and SLC/CIP, funded by Sohmen Endowment. “Intercultural Teamwork” was first offered in Spring 2005 as a collaborative effort between ME and SLC (then FLL) as a two-week Study Abroad course to Shanghai, Beijing, Harbin and Ningbo, working with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harbin Institute of Technology and Ningbo University. About 220 Purdue Engineering and Liberal Arts students have benefited from this on-site experience learning about China including language, culture, technology and economy. They also paired up with Chinese students learning about their college life and in return, understand the challenges Chinese students face while they study at Purdue. In addition to this expanded knowledge about China, students also report actual placement benefit in job market as US employers seek individuals with global experiences. On the thank-you dinner and the 10th year celebration, students from Ningbo and Purdue showed off their talents through comedy, dances, instrument and songs. CIP has been supporting this course with personnel, language and cultural orientations.
