映画に関して
「きょうを守る」(2011 本編70分)は東日本大震災で被災なされた方の震災後の生活の様子を記録したドキュメンタリーです。監督の菅野結花さん（ご自身も被災者）は母親、高校の同級生と母親をインタビューして、それを編集してまとめました。被災者同志でのインタビューでしか引き出すことができない様子がうまく描かれています。報道機関やプロが作ったドキュメンタリーではないことで、他の作品と一線を画しています。昨年十月に山梨映画祭に出品され、高い評価を受けました。現在、日本各地で上映会が行われています。尚、映画には地震や津波が襲ってくる映像などは含まれていません。

監督について
菅野結花さんは岩手県陸前高田市の出身です。現在山梨県立大学の四年生です。震災当日は山梨にいて、直接の被災は免れましたが、実家は流されてしまいました。また、中学校の同級生三名を津波で亡くされました。

字幕プロジェクト

"Ky? o mamoru” (2011, 70 minutes) depicts the lives of people who were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. In order to record their lives after the earthquake, Ms. Kanno interviewed people in her hometown, including her mother, her childhood classmates, and their parents. This documentary film turned out to be unique and effective as she was able to bring out insights that only a person who shared the same experience could do. The film was first presented at Yamanashi Film Festival in 2011, and it has been shown throughout Japan.

Ms. Yuka Kanno is from Rikuzentakata in Iwate. She is currently a senior at Yamanashi Prefectural University. Her home was destroyed by the tsunami. She also lost three friends who had been her classmates in junior high school.

The subtitle project
The English subtitles for this film were created by over sixty students in Japanese language classes at twelve different schools in the United States. The project leader is Professor Kazumi Hatasa, Director of the Middlebury Japanese School at Mills.
