柳家さん喬（落語）
Yanagiya Sankyo
Born in 1948, he became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan VI in 1967 and received a shin'uchi rank in 1981. He is a veteran rakugo performer who can portray the subtle emotions of a character during a performance. He is currently a board member of the Association of Rakugo Performers.
林家二楽（紙切り）
Hayashiya Niraku
Hayashiya Niraku was born in 1967 into a kamikiri family. His father was a famous kamikiri, Shoraku the second, and Niraku entered the business by being an apprentice with his father in 1989. He has been performing on stage since 1991, and is one of a handful of professional kamikiri performers.
柳亭左龍（落語）
Ryutei Saryu
Saryuu was born in 1970 and became an apprentice of Yanagiya Sankyo in 1993. He also received a shin’uchi rank in 2006. Like his teacher, Sankyo, Saryuu concentrates on classical stories (Koten) and has an orthodox performance style.

ミドルベリー大学日本語学校では、学生達による小噺の発表に始まり、柳家さん喬師匠、柳亭左龍師匠のお二人に加え、紙切りの林家二楽師匠を迎え「落語と紙切りの夕べ」と題した落語会を開催いたします。
この落語会は日本語学校の学生達に落語にふれてもらうことが第一の目的ですが、近くにお住まいの方にもご来場いただけたらと存じます。落語には英語で字幕をつけますので、日本語がわからなくても、ある程度楽しんでいただけると思います。
お迎えした柳家さん喬師匠、柳亭左龍師匠、林家二楽師匠は東京の寄席やその他の高座に毎日のように出て第一線で活躍なさっています。テレビにも数多く出演なさっています。さらに、2006年より毎年、米国バーモント州で行なわれているミドルベリー大学夏期日本語学校に一週間滞在して落語と紙切りのワークショップや、学生達に小噺をさせるという活動に熱心に取り組み、学生達に毎年貴重な体験を提供して下さっています。今年は、ミルズ大学で日本語学校をはじめて開催しますので、師匠方もはじめてのカリフォルニアを楽しみになさっています。
Middlebury College Japanese School brings three highly accomplished professional rakugo and kamikiri performers. Yanagiya Sankyo, Hayashiya Niraku, and Ryutei Saryu. They have been spending a week at the Japanese School every summer since 2006. However, this is the first year they come to Japanese School at Mills. They are all excited about their first trip to California.
The primary purpose of their visit to the Japanese School is to introduce our students to rakugo, kamikiri and yose. They visit classrooms of every level to demonstrate their skills and answer questions. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with these professionals up close in casual manner.
The rakugo event on July 8, 2011 is the finale of their activities and it is open to public so that folks in the bay area can have a taste of traditional Japanese story telling and paper-cutting performance. We also have student's performing very short stories called kobanashi. We will employ the traditional yose style. (i.e. rakugo theatre in Tokyo) All professional rakugo performances will have English subtitles projected on a screen so that non-Japanese-speaking audience will still be able to enjoy the show.
We will ask you not to speak in English in front of our students who are under the language pledge. They are allowed only to use Japanese. (Reading English subtitles will be an exception.)
